Mission Statement

Germany is one of the leading countries in horse breeding and equestrian sports. In contrast, research for the benefit of the horse and the equine industry is limited compared to other species. While renowned equine research units do exist in the United Kingdom, the Unites States of America and other countries, no internationally accepted specific equine research centre existed in Germany. Research in veterinary colleges consists mainly of case-orientated studies on pathological topics while research in animal science institutions focusses on population genetics and statistical evaluations. Studies on equine ethology, reproduction, husbandry, nutrition and physiology are conducted much less than needed.

The Brandenburg State Stud Foundation and the Vienna University of Veterinary Science have established the first equine science research institute in Germany. By joining resources from both institutions, excellent facilities for applied research have been established in Neustadt (Dosse). The institute conducts its own research projects but, in addition, is a scientific partner for the German Equestrian Federation and other horse breeding and equestrian associations as well as for scientists from other academic institutions which do not have facilities for long-term studies on healthy horses.
