The aim of this study was to find out, whether the feed (canned food, dry food, home made food, captured animals) has an effect on taurine concentration.
For this purpose 84 healthy cats of different breed and from different regions in Austria were investigated. The age ranged from 1 to 17 years (median 2 years). 41 of the cats were kept on farms with the possibility to hunt. 43 cats were kept indoors solely.
The blood samples were taken 12 hours after the last feed intake, taurine was measured by HPLC and Fluorescence detection.
The mean taurine concentration of all samples was 162 µmol/l (SD=106). There was no difference between in- and outdoor kept cats. Due to the feed there was a difference between cats never getting canned food and those who get canned food or mixed food including canned food (p=0.027).
