UV-Disinfection of water

Abstract
Disinfection of drinking water and of waste water with UV-radiation is of increasing importance in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, The Netherlands and in several other European countries. Chlorination of drinking water is put into doubt more and more because in certain waters mutagenic substances may be produced. Therefore in Europe and also in the USA ultraviolet radiation is increasingly used for disinfection of drinking water. Because in Austria with the ÖNORM M5873-1 (plants with low pressure mercury lamps), which was developed together with us, and the connected type-testing, a lot of experience exists, we are co-workers for the development of a new manual for UV-disinfection of water by the US-american Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Furtheron the Austrian standard ÖNORM M5873-2 (plants with medium pressure mercury lamps), is developed at present in a commetee chaired by us and with many international participants (Germany, The Netherlands, France, Canada, Great Britain).
The biodosimetric measurement of the fluence which is delivered by a UV-plant (Reduction Equivalent Fluence) is the only means to determine the working range of such plants under flow through conditions. Computational methods like CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) can only help in developing and optimising UV-plants, the final results are only given by biodosimetry.
Important future working fields are: to measure and to take into account the spectral sensitivity of microorganisms when polychromatic UV-radiation is used (medium pressure lamp), determination of fluence distributions produced by UV-plants and the measurement of ageing of lamps and of protecting sleeves.
