Kynurenines and the respiratory parameters of rat brain mitochondria: aging and alzheimer s disease

Abstract
Baran H. et al., 2001 investigated the alteration of kynurenine-metabolism during perinatal asphyxia which may lead to spasticity, epilepsia, menral retardation etc. in humans.
The respiratory chain and its coupled ATP synthesis are the most important functions performed by mitochondria. It has been shown recently that two metabolites of kynurenine, acidic kynurenine and anthranilic acid, are capable to influence the respiratory parameters and the ATP synthesis (Baran H. et al., 2000). The manipulation of kynurenine-metabolism via inhibitors of transaminases has been investigated in this correlation as well (Baran H. et al., 2000). The imprortance of the mitochiondrial kynurenine-metabolism in neurodegenerative disease and during aging is determined too.
