Neuroprotection in experimental ischemia

Abstract
Cooperative studies on the prevention of ischemia induced injury by probing several putative neuro-protectants are conducted. Modelsystems in slices involve
- excitotoxic activation
- calcium-induced early postischemic signalling (PKC and calpains activation)
- modulation of glia-derived responses, such as anti-inflammatory treatments, blockade of death-domain-coupled receptors and protection offered by neurotrophins
- free radical-mediated injury (antioxidative treatments)
- mitochondrial permeability transition (by blocking megachannels by cyclosporine A)
