Influence of stress on vaccination and immune response in the cat

Abstract
Stress situations have an influence on the course of infectious diseases and on the immune responses. Therefore it is usually avoided to vaccinate in situations when animals are under stress. In cats changing their owner or entering a cattery often the conflict occurs that on the one hand an active immunity should be achieved very quickly but on the other hand these animals may have a reduced immune response because of the stress situation. Only few information, that would be very helpful for practical aspects, is available about this situation. The project will quantify the stress situation in cats entering a situation like in catteries and their immune response to vaccination (two schedules). The quantification of the stress situation will be performed by measuring cortisol metabolites in faeces. The cellular and humoral immune responses will be investigated.
