Emergence of Usutu virus in Austria: characterization of the virus, establishment of diagnostic methods and consequences of infection for human beings, domestic and wild animals

Abstract
A main aim of this project is the preliminary molecular genetic characterization of the Usutu virus (USUV) strain present in Austria. Test systems based on PCR, immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization will be developed. Pilot studies for the development of serological assay will be performed. In addition, virological and seroepidemiological studies of USUV infections in different species are intended.
