Claw diseases of dairy cows in various housing systems: coparison tied stall system - loose housing system

Abstract
A total of 164 dairy cows (Simmenthal, RHF, HF) were examined concerning occurrence and prevalence of claw disorders. In ten dairy farms in Salzburg, five of a loose housing system, five of a tethered housing system, three examinations of the claws were carried out, classifying the pathological conditions using a claw scoring system and a heel horn ersosio score. A farm score was established, recording the economical status, the hygiene and management factors. Good housing systems were positively correlated to claw condition. No significant difference between housing systems was recorded. Thethered dairy cows expressed a higher ratio of digital dermatitis than expected. A positive effect of periodical trimming was confirmed and more efficient in loose housing systems
