"Austrian Proteomics Platform"; Project: Introducing new proteomic strategies in veterinary medicine

Abstract
Modern electrophoretic methods like two-dimensional electrophoresis are valuable tools, e.g. for the analysis of body fluids, and allow finding of potential disease markers. During the last years our work mainly focused on establishing 2-DE reference maps for sera of different species (rat, dog, pig, cow, horse). In a next step serum protein patterns change in course of defined diseases will be investigated. For this aim, new and innovative staining technologies (fluorescence staining and DIGE) will be established. With DIGE (difference image gel electrophoresis), proteins in different samples are labelled with three fluorescent dyes prior to electrophoretic separation in one gel. After appropriate filtering for the different dyes the images of this single gel can be compared, as each one corresponds to a different sample. Once optimized, this method should make detection after 2-DE easier, faster and also improve reproducibility, compared to the now used colorimetric staining technology.
