Determination of glucocorticoid and catecholaminemetabolites in the faeces of rats (Short title: stress hormone metabolites in rat faeces)

Abstract
Stress makes the adrenal gland cortex to produce glucocorticoids (corticosterone) and the marrow to produce catecholamines (adrenalin and noradrenalin).
The concentration of these stress hormones in blood resbles a parameter to evaluate the rate of liability. Because of the uncomfortable handling that is necessary to gain a blood sample of animals (mainly in small ones) which can influence the levels of stress hormones, non-invasive techniques are needed.
In line with a radio-metabolism study of corticosterone, adrenalin and noradrenalin, data should be gained through the investigation of excretion material. Products of metabolim in excrements are characterized to establish enzyme immuno assays (EIAs) for their measurement.
The biological relevance of these assays do determine all the metabolites of corticosterone is tested via pharmacological stimulation or suppression to inspect the activity of the cortex of the adrenal gland.
After evaluating the best EIAs to perform a quantitative analysis of the mentioned metabolites, we tested excrements at the research center in Seibersdorf to determine the influence of living conditions on rats.
Due to the establishment od non-invasive methods to determine the liability, we want to aim a reduction of animal trials (animal protection) and increase the validity of the experiments, beacause additional data are collected through deterining the endocrinic condition of the animals without their presence.
