The Formation of Essential Oil Compounds in Sage and Camphor Basil During Spatial Leaf Growth

Abstract
Probably the most famous class of natural products derive from the pool of essential oils. Especially the spices and aromatic herbs of the Labiatae family like sage (Salvia officinalis) and basil (Ocimum sp.) are used by man since many centuries and probably millenniums.
The basic plan for the project is to modify the leaf expansion, growth and shape by specific plant growth regulators, herbicides and antibiotics and to investigate the influence of spatial parameters on the terpenoid biosynthesis on sage and to a minor extent on camphor basil.
The planned investigations will combine physiological, anatomical and genetic features of leaves, leaf segments and single oil glands with chemical features of essential oils, using chemometric and statistical analysis.
We expect to provide a better understanding on essential oil formation and variation during ontogenesis, to locate where and when on the leaves specific essential oil changes occur.
