Neurotoxic potential of swainsonine and related toxins

Abstract
Swainsonine is an alkaloid deriving from astragalus species that specifically inhibits lysosomal mannosidase. The intoxication leads to so-called locoism that constituts a massive problem for livestock in the USA, New Zealand, and other countries. Swainsonine is used as a model substance for lysosomal storage disease in children. In coperation with the University of Yangling, the neurotoxic potential of swainsonine and neuroprotection against locoism will be studied in cell cultures.
