Abstract:
Two weeks after she had been mated, a Scottish Terrier bitch showed hemorrhagic cystitis and urolithiasis. Chemical analysis of the concrements revealed a rare mixture of calcium, oxalate, ammonium, magnesium, phosphate and cystine. Cystitis was treated by local instillation of antibiotics, the use of teratogenic drugs was avoided. Twenty-five days post coitum the bitch was diagnosed pregnant sonographically. To save the pups a cystotomy was not performed, but the conservative therapy continued. Because of the composition of the uroliths and the requirements of the pregnant bitch a special diet had to be fed. A medical check up was performed regularly and on the 3(rd), 25(th) and 35(th) day post conceptionem the bitch was additionally examined vaginoscopically and sonographically. Pregnancy and parturition elapsed without disturbances although urolithiasis persisted. Five days and again twelve weeks after parturition mother and pups felt ill, all showed severe diarrhea, the siblings were additionally infected with Cheyletiella yasguri and Ehrlichia canis and did not gain weight sufficiently.
