During two years, the mineral and micronutrient element content in the various plant parts of poppy (Papaver somniferum L.) was studied at the harvest time of the seeds, comparing two winter genotypes (sown in autumn, then overwintering) with the two summer varieties 'Edel-Weiss' and 'Marianne' (sown in spring). Differences among varieties were found for the elements Ca, Mg, K, P, Mn and Fe. The variety 'Marianne' displayed higher mineral element contents than the variety 'Edel-Weiss', whereas winter poppy 'Zeno' showed intermediate levels. Winter poppy tended to higher Ca and Mg contents in the stems and higher P contents in the leaves than the summer varieties. The seeds of winter poppy had Ca and Mg contents comparable to those of 'Marianne'. Altogether the nutrient uptake of winter poppy was similar to summer poppy; winter poppy took up I from the soil somewhat more Ca and Mg but less K than the I summer cultivars. The Cd accumulation in seeds of winter poppy cannot yet be assessed definitely. As for other cultivars, seeds low in Cd can be obtained from growing sites with low contamination with this toxic metal.
