Abstract:
In the first part of this two part communication, medicinal products authorized in Austria for treatment of small ruminants were presented and pharmacotherapeutical shortfalls identified. This second part covers the options for off label use of veterinary and human medicines and the import of veterinary medicinal products according to the "Austrian Act on the Control of Veterinary Medicinal Products" and the "Austrian Act on Import of Medicinal Products 2002" as recently amended. By off label use and import of medicines most of the deficits regarding local anesthesia, anti-inflammatory and antiparasitic treatment as well as antimicrobial medication and treatment of renal failures can be compensated for. However, in respect to general anesthesia and regarding disorders of the cardiovascular system pharmacotherapeutical gaps remain existent. For a number of substances including cephalosporins and fluoquinolones MRLs for sheep and goat have been fixed. Even so, no products containing such compounds are registered for treatment of these species in Austria.
