In this study 140 samples of broiler faeces were examined for Campylobacter (C.) spp. by a cultural method and an enzyme linked immuno assay (ELFA). The Vitec Immuno Diagnostic Assay System (VIDAS) was to be evaluated for the detection of C.- in faeces-samples. All samples were prepared in parallel with and without an enrichment step. Sample suspensions were made of peptone water for direct plating and of Preston medium for enrichment. The incubation was made under microaerobic conditions at 42,5 °C 24 h for the enrichment and 48 h for the selective agar plates (mCCDA). Isolated strains were identified by phase-contrast-microscopy, Dryspot Campy Test and PCR. For the VIDAS Campylobacter assay (CAM) suspension material of the enriched and the non-enriched samples was prepared and centrifugated twice. The results of the culture with and without the enrichment step were put together and 47 C.-positive isolates were detected. Compared to the culture 1,4 % false positive and 10 % false negative results of the VIDAS (with enrichment) could be observed. The relative sensitivity of the VIDAS lied at 70,2 %, the relative specificity at 97,8 %. Without enrichment, the relative sensitivity lied at 42,6 %. Therefor the enrichment step proved to be necessary for the VIDAS too.
