Diplomarbeit, Vet. Med. Univ. Wien, pp. 120.
In this thesis herbal medicinal products, plant food supplements and plant feed supplements with ginseng, ginger and devils claw as main ingredients are compared.
A substantial market survey shows which products with these plants are available on the Austrian and German market. To each plant some of the most common preparations were bought for closer analysis. The examination of these products comprises the price per daily dose of the different supplements and the price per milligram/milliliter of the active agent (ginseng, ginger or devils claw). This comparison shows that there are vast differences in prices not only between the different product categories but also among them.
Furthermore the legal claims of herbal drugs, food supplements and feed supplements are explained and the purchased products are compared with the relevant regulations. It turned out that there are deficiencies in the labeling in each of the three product categories. The purchased food supplements and plant drugs come off well in this respect, but most feed supplements lack a lot.
The purchased devils claw products were examined in the laboratory to find out if they contain traceable amounts of harpagoside. Indeed the results show, that all tested preparations contain a verifiable lot of the searched substance.
