Verification of phytosterols in nutritional supplements containing extracts of Cucurbita pepo var. styriaca by use of thin layer chromatography and SPME-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry

The aim of this work was to analyze phytosterols in nutritional supplements for
humans and animals containing pumpkin seed extracts with thin-layerchromatography
for qualitative analyses and to test the practicability of a
SPME-GC/MS method of determining phytosterols in blood serum.
The thin-layer-chromatographic analysis followed the standard operation
procedure of the DC-Atlas (PACHALY 2010).
The nutritional supplements named Klosterfrau Kürbisplus, Aurita Kürbiskern
Plus, Mondosan Bio Kürbiskern Plus und Magister Doskar Kürbiskern showed
the best spectra compared to the DC-Atlas (PACHALY 2010).
The gas-chromatographic analysis was conducted according to a method of
DOMENO et al. published in the year 2005. This used method was quite costly
A price comparison of the nutritional products was made as well.
Herbal nutritional supplements are a very good alternative to chemical drugs,
and also to phytopharmaceuticals especially because of their low or even nonexistent
side-effects and simplified marketing authorisation processes.
Nutritional supplements containing pumpkin seed extracts are mainly used as
treatment against benign prostatic hypertrophy.
