Within the context of this thesis the difference of the bacterial flora between the normal fecal and the caecotrophy of guinea pigs was examined. For the test six adult animals were used, which were kept in two-party groups. The animals were watched for four weeks daily between 6 pm and 12 pm. Above all, the faeces and caecotrophy excreation and intake and the behavior were observed. For the bacterial examination fecal and caecotrophy had to be taken preferably fresh out of every animal. The samples were worked off for the bacterial clinical diagnostics and spread on the appropriate agar tiling within 12 hours. There just was a significant difference between the two types of faeces in the total bacterial count of Lactobacillus spp. In the caecotrophy as well as in the normal fecal there are Bifidobacteria. The observation of the different faeces revealed, that there is no visual distinction of both fecal types. Active phases, where the animals mainly were busy with feed intake and the normal fecal excretion were followed by rest periods where the guinea pigs repeatedly took caecotrophy. The consume of the caecotrophe was made in several stages, so that a piece was bitten off frequently. On offering the collected caecotrophy again, it was fed anew, where the offering of the normal faeces was refused. The results have shown that a real caecotrophy in guinea pigs exists. First of all, because of the significant differences between the total colony number of Lactobacillus spp. and on the other side, because of the ability to select between normal fecal and caecotrophy.
