Abstract:
The aim of this study was to design and manufacture a full mouth speculum that would fit the majority of breeds and can be employed safely for most dental treatments. Commercially available models of full mouth sepcula were analysed. Finally, a prototype based on a single screw opening mechanism was built and tested under clinical conditions. In a second step the device was evaluated under hospital and field conditions in 169 horses by 6 experienced veterinarians not employed at the reporting clinic. 5 judges evaluated the speculum based on a standardised questionnaire. A sixth judge submitted his experiences in a summarized fashion. All testing veterinarians evaluated the speculum as being safe and reliable and well tolerated by horses.
