Longitudinal changes in the variables of innate immunity, metabolites, and minerals were measured during the periparturient period in the plasma of a 7year-old Holstein cow incidentally affected by downer cow syndrome (DCS) postpartum, and these data were compared with results of 7 clinically healthy Holstein cows, which served as controls. During the prepartum period the DCS-cow demonstrated a dramatic increase of plasma lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-binding protein compared with the controls and a dramatic rise in the concentrations of non-esterified fatty acids, beta-hydroxybutyrate, and zinc as well as lower anti-LPS immunoglobulin G and cholesterol in the plasma. In conclusion, this retrospective case report suggests that the LPS-induced inflammation and the metabolic perturbations before parturition may facilitate the development, or aggravate the outcome, of downer cow syndrome postpartum.
