Abstract:
Objective: Investigations on effects of galacturonides as feed additive compared with the growth promoter flavophospholipol and a control group of weaned piglets. Material and methods: In a feeding study galacturonides were tested as feed additive, compared with the antibiotic feed additive flavophospholipol in the rearing of piglets (galakturonides: 10 g/kg respectively 5 g/kg feed, flavophospholipol: 10 mg/kg feed). The piglets were treated three days before until 27 days after weaning with the different feed additives or none of these kind of feed additives, respectively. Group 1 (n = 42) was fed with diets containing galacturonides, group 3 (n = 42) containing the feed additive flavophospholipol and group 2 (n = 40) with diets, which contained none of these substances. Rectal swab samples were taken periodically of all piglets. Results:The results did not show significant differences concerning the bacteriologic findings (incidence of haemolytic E coli, serotypes, antimicrobial susceptibility testing), weight gain and feed conversion rate between the groups. Haemolytic E coli resistent against one or more antibiotics were isolated from weaners of each group. Conclusion: Further investigations of feed additves obtained from plants are needed.
