Abstract:
Several studies show that surgical castration without the use of anaesthetics / analgesics leads to severe intra- and postoperative pain. Castration is jet necessary to avoid boar taint, but multiple options of anaesthesia and / or analgesia as well as methods without castration are discussed. The Netherlands decided to use CO2/O2 narcosis from 2007 on and plan to abolish castration completely in 2015. The aim of this study is to evaluate the practical use of a commercially available CO2/O2 narcosis device (MS Pigsleeper, Fa. Schippers GmbH, Kerken). In particular problems with the use of the apparatus and the required time are considered.
