This study investigated if the increase of the cortisol level after the castration of
suckling piglets can be reduced by a preemptive application of ketoprofen. Results of
previous studies prove the ability of cortisol for the evaluation of pain
(SCHÖNREITER et al., 1999; PRUNIER et al., 2005; CARROLL et al., 2006; ZÖLS
et al., 2006b; SCHULZ et al., 2007; LANGHOFF et al., 2009). Cortisol was therefore
chosen as the parameter for this study.
