The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of the vaccines Porcilis® Glaesser and Porcilis® PCV. The vaccinated groups were compared with each other and with an unvaccinated control group. The study was performed at a pig breeding and fattening farm in Russia. The mortality rate there was nearly 50 %, gastrointestinal disorders 42 %, respiratory disorders 28 % and 15% of the animals on the farm were runts. Since it was not clear in advance whether the problems have the origin in a PCV2-Infection or in a HPS-Infection, the two vaccines were tested simultaneously. The study included 5696 pigs in total, 1904 pigs were vaccinated with Porcilis® Glaesser (HPS group), 1902 with Porcilis® PCV (PCV2 group) and 1890 animals were not vaccinated (control group). Vaccination was carried out on the 14th and 35th day of life. To assess the efficacy of the vaccines the animals were weighed on the 35th, 106th and 240th day of life. The daily weight gain was calculated for the breeding period, the fattening period and the entire study period. Mortality rate and incidence of clinical symptoms and their treatments were recorded. After statistical analysis the three different experimental groups were compared regarding weight, average daily weight gain, clinical signs and mortality. On the 240th day of life (day of slaughter) the PCV2 group had the highest weight with 122.64 kg average. The animals of the HPS group had on average 3.42 kg less and the animals of the control group 3.67 kg less then the animals of the PCV2 group. During the rearing period, the HPS group had the highest daily weight gain with 344.82 g. During the fattening period and also over the entire experimental period the highest daily weight gain was recorded in the PCV2 group. With 13.18 % the rate of respiratory symptoms was the lowest in the PCV2 group. In the HPS group and in the control group, the percentage of animals with respiratory symptoms was around 28%. A similar picture emerged in relation to gastrointestinal problems. The animals that were vaccinated with Porcilis® PCV showed with 28.50 % the least of gastrointestinal symptoms. The HPS group had with 45.33 % the highest percentage of pigs with gastrointestinal symptoms. In the control group there was a rate of 42.17 % of diseased pigs. In the PCV2 group the percentage of runts was with 6.75 %, well below the level in the other experimental groups. With 14.39 % in the HPS group and 14.87 % in the control group the percentage of runts was higher. With 33.37 % the mortality rate in the PCV2 group was the lowest over the entire testing period. In the other experimental groups about 50 % of the animals died over the entire testing period. With 8.68 % only in the fattening period the control group had the lowest mortality rate recorded. In both vaccination groups this rate was well above 10 %. In summary it can be said that vaccination with Porcilis® PCV achieved better results compared to vaccination with Porcilis® Glaesser and showed much more significant differences to the control group.
