A technology was developed for the collection of samples from all newborn animals in lifestock populations during the ear tagging process. The samples are preserved automatically by mumification in the sample container and can be stored at room temperature for years. DNA can be isolated quite easily from these samples. Only in less than 0,5% of the samples no analyses could be performed. Samples collection from all animals allows many different molecular genetic analyses for breeding purposes and traceability for consumer protection. Also BVDV eradication in cattle populations is possible.
