After general introductory notes on the biomechanics of the hind limb, the paper focuses on the tarsal joint. It was checked whether elevation of the heels influenced the joint angle during the stance phase. Six horses were examined with a kinematic measuring system trotting on the treadmill. Measurements of the tarsal joint angle were taken without a wedge elevating the heels and with wedges of 8 and 16 degrees, respectively. The tarsal joint angle was significantly more flexed after application of the different wedges, the most significant alteration of the joint angle occurring at 20% and 30% of the stride duration.
