The reason to perform this study was to obtain reference data in kinematic back movement of clinically healthy dogs and to compare the obtained results between dogs with and without radiological changes in the lumbosacral junction. This in vivo kinematic study was done on 22 clinically sound Malinois (Belgium Shepherd Dog). Light reflective spherical markers were glued on the spinal processes of C7, T6, T13, L3, L7 and S3. The movement of the spherical markers was recorded at walk by four cameras, which were positioned around a treadmill. Five motion cycles, referring to the stance time of the right forlimb, were analysed. The movement in the sagittal and transversal plane and the time of occurrence of the maximal marker position as well as the angulation of C7-T6-T13, T6-T13-L3, T13-L3-L7 and L3-L7-S3 were calculated. The significantly highest range of motion (p < 0.01) in the transversal direction showed the marker T13 with 6.30 cm (S = 1.50) and L3 with 6.0 cm (S = 1.0). In the vertical direction S3 obtained the significantly highest ROM (p < 0.01) with 2.10 cm (S = 0,80cm). In the horizontal plane the angle T6-T13-L3 showed a significantly lower range of motion with 10.69° (S = 2.57) in comparison to the other measured angles (p < 0.05). In the sagittal plane the angle T13-L3-L7 opens significantly less than the angles C7-T6-T13 and L3-L7-S3 (p < 0.05). Dogs with radiological changes in the lumbosacral junction obtained the maximum at the angle T13-L3-L7 in the horizontal plane significantly earlier than the others (p < 0.05).
