Abstract:
The cranial cruciate ligament rupture is one of the most frequently orthopedic diseases in young, active and large-breed dogs. The treatment of choice is the reconstruction surgery of the cranial cruciate ligament, nevertheless there will develop atrophy of the quadriceps femoris muscle in the postsurgical phase because of the loss of function of the involved limb. Electrotherapy seems to be a good method of rehabilitation for muscle strength to accelerate recovery and it is often used in human medicine combined with a standard rehabilitation program. The purpose of the diploma thesis was to design a review of all existing studies of human and veterinary medicine of the neuromuscular electrical stimulation therapy of the postsurgical atrophy of the quadriceps femoris muscle after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. The researched studies were classified into different grades based on the criteria of the Cochrane Muskuloskeletal Review Group (SANTESSO, et al. 2006) to evaluate the effect of neuromuscular electrical stimulation of the postoperative atrophy of the quadriceps femoris muscle after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. The hypothesis of this work says that 70% of the considered studies about the methods of neuromuscular electrical stimulation therapy describe a beneficial effect on the postsurgical atrophy of the quadriceps femoris muscle after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.
