Abstract:
In this experiment, the ground reaction forces of three clinically and orthopaedically healthy dogs were evaluated using force sensing resistors. Three repeat measurements were carried out on each dog and the data collected were compared with one another. The force sensing resistors were attached to the third foot pad of all four limbs and fixed with adhesive tape. The force sensing resistors were calibrated before the start of each measurement. All dogs were led over a treadmill during the measurement with the force sensing resistors in order to achieve stabilised measurement results. After a phase to allow the dogs to get used to the force resisting sensors and the treadmill to warm up, the measurements were started. The ground reaction forces determined were normalised to the body weight. Peak vertical force, mean vertical force and the vertical impulse were determined and the symmetry index was calculated. The symmetry index calculated showed substantial deviations in the physiological values within the measurement with the exception of Dog 3 in Measurement 3. Furthermore, there were substantial fluctuations between the individual measurements on one and the same dog. The deviations in the results were up to 29.49% with Dog 1. This finding demonstrates that the values gained with this system were not significant and cannot be used. Future work should optimise this measurement system through the use of robust and more sensitive sensing resistors and through a larger group of dogs and the comparison between healthy and lame dogs.
