The aim of this study was to evaluate the health status of the Maine Coon population
based on the results of statistical evalutation of clinical archives.
Furthermore breeding recommendations were also developed.
In the retrospective study, the data of 520 Maine Coon cats from four veterinary
clinics in Austria and Germany with special emphasis on hereditary diseases, breed
predispositions, and diseases with possible relevance in breeding were evaluated.
Diseases that do not occur in the study population, but are described in literature for
the Maine Coon cat, were congenital deafness, elbow dysplasia, and spinal muscular
