The goal of this study was to see the impact of two different bits on the tractive forces while using
side reins on the horse.
Ten warmblood horses were measured in walk and trot by using a treadmill. The side reins were
used to get the horse into the correct position with the nose on the verge of the vertical. Two
different bits were utilised: a double jointed snaffle and a mullen mouth snaffle.
The rein forces were measured with electronic force-sensoring sensores and the received datas
were processed via computer. The results are significant differences of the tractive forces between
the two bits. Six of ten horses achieved higher rein forces with the double jointed snaffle in walk.
Nine of ten horses attained higher rein forces by using the double jointed snaffle in trot.
Actually the tractive forces add up to two newtons higher while using the double jointed snaffle.
The tractive forces between walk and trot did not show any important differences. Two maxima per
horse were measured. However, just one of the two measured maxima showed significant
differnces between the gaits. In conclusion the tractive forces appeared higher in walk.
Moreover the side rein forces between left and right rein only differed less than one newton.
Therefore both of the side reins were nearly equal.
Furthermore the tractive forces of this study reached lower results compared to ridden horses.
In summary the use of different bits has an effect on the horse’s tractive forces.
