This Bachelor thesis informs about current and historical developments of state stud farm breeding of draught horses and its effects on the quality and quantity of the populations in each European country. The main question whether historical events affected the breeding activity of state stud farms has been confirmed in the course of my research. The number of draught horses increased in periods such as the intensification of agriculture, industrialisation and mechanisation and decreased with the advance of motorisation. A significant influence of the state stud farms on single draught horse breeds became apparent only in a few countries. Here the studs played an important role for the private draught horse breeding by supplying selected state owned breeding stallions even in times of economic crisis. Nowadays these institutions often are part of conservation breeding concepts and take a key position in transfer of knowledge, research and marketing programs. Nearly all state stud farms became members of the "European State Studs Association" (ESSA), which promotes their value in the context of cultural heritage and strengthens their position and medial presence.
