Abstract:
Based on records of the University’s historical archive, books and papers the history of the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna and of th e subjects animal breeding, genetics and agricultural operation teach are shown. Animal breeding has been teached from the very first Viennese Veterinary school and deals mainly with horse breeding until the beginning or middle of the 19 th century. From that time on professors start to focus on general animal production and teach about all mammals. In 1964 under the direction of Franz Pirchner the institute is renamed to „Tierzucht und Haustiergenetik“. In 1994 the department for Agrobiotechnol ogy in Tulln and in 2007 the reproductive center Wieselburg are opened. Agricultural operation teach is taught in 1776 for the first time. Until 1849 it is apparently not part of the curriculum and from 1900 professors of the later University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences teach the subject. Since 1994 agricultural operation teach is not an obligatory subject anymore.
