Shore D and ball indentation hardness were measured in different segments of the hoof walls of 28 equine hooves. The two testing methods are correlating and showed increasing hardness from the coronary band to the weight bearing border (mean = 65.76 to mean = 63.0 and mean = 19.33 N/mm(2) to mean = 29.25 N/mm(2)). Shore D hardness is decreasing within the stratum medium towards the center of the hoof. Ball indentation hardness is higher in the hoof wall of the toe than in the lateral/medial segments. No difference was found between front hooves and hind hooves, pigmentation was not taken into account. The strong correlation between mechanical properties of hoof horn and its dry matter is again proved, but other parameters are equally important.
