Project(s): Microscopic characterisation of poisonous plants

Following the introduction of a new lot of hay in the feed of a flock of fourty sheep, five animals died from an intoxication of autumn crocus (Colchicum autumnale L.) present in the hay. The post mortem examination of two animals indicated an acute gastroenteritis and the epithelial cells of the small intestine showed an increased number of mitoses. Two samples from the fed hay contained 3.8% and 0.82% autumn crocus parts, respectively. The microscopic characteristics of this toxic plants allowed to identify their remains in the rumen content of the dead animals. The seeds of autumn crocus made up 1.3% of the rumen content from one of the animals.
