Project(s): Pectines of carrots as a substitute of antibiotics to avoid diarrhoea in piglets


Abstract:
Carrot pectines for prevention of diarrhea in the rearing of piglets in a field study. The aim of the two studies was to test the efficacy of carrot powder (boiled, dehydrated and grinded carrots) in the prophylaxis of diarrhea of weaners in a piggery. Rations containing carrot powder (group 1), neither carrot powder nor antibiotic feed additive (group 2), and the antibiotic feed additive tylosinphosphate (group 3) were fled to weaners, 28 days to 39 days old at weaning. In the first study, the litters were fed from the age of ten days with the respective rations, in the second study groups of three piglets were randomly assigned to the test-rations after weaning. The observation continued for two to four weeks after weaning. In the first study significantly less (p less than or equal to 0.001) piglets of group 1 and group 3 suffered from diarrhea in the first week after weaning compared to group 2. In the second study no piglet suffered from diarrhea. Between the groups no significant difference in weight gain (group 1: 0.40 kg/d/animal; group 2: 0.38 kg/d/animal; group 3: 0.41 kg/d/animal) and feed uptake could be observed during the first 20 days after weaning.
