Project(s): Survey on the use of phytotherapy by veterinary practitioners in Austria, Germany and Switzerland

Abstract:
Introduction Numerous veterinarians use phytopharmaceuticals in the treatment of various diseases. The aim of this study was to conduct a survey into that use in Austria. Material and methods Frequency and assessment of phytopharmaceutical treatment as implemented by Austrian veterinarians were evaluated by a questionnaire. The investigation concentrated primarily on the use of herbal medicinal products in relation to the medical indications, course of illness and species. Secondly, the opinion of the owners and the veterinarians were taken into consideration. Results The main applications of phytopharmaceuticals involve intestinal and skin diseases in dogs and cats. The preparations most often used were Stullmisan(R), Crataegutt(R) and herbal dermatologica containing Peru balsam. No differences in frequency and application of commercially available herbal remedies among male and female veterinarians or varying age groups were found. However, female veterinarians prescribed teas more often than their male counterparts. Conclusion The opinion of the owners and veterinarians concerning the use of herbal medicinal products were almost entirely positive. Veterinarians value phytoproducts in their repertoire of therapy.
