The aim of this study was to show the taurine status of healthy cats in Austria. The mean plasma taurine concentration in this study was 162 #µmol/l#. This means that the cat population gets enough taurine, although cats fed with canned diet had a much lower plasma taurine concentration (150,97 #µmol/l#) than cats which received no canned diet (221,32 #µmol/l#). Castrated cats showed a lower level of plasma taurine, but this study can not give an definite answer to this question, because there was no castrated cat of this population which was not fed a canned diet.
