Abstract:
The aim of this study was to determine the stimulation of the blood flow of Ginkgo biloba in horses. The study was executed through examining the horses by means of thermography and an analysis of the plasma level of some components of the Ginkgo biloba extract in all horses. The subject group was fed with Ginkgo extract or Placebo twice a day over a period of six weeks. Once a week the temperature of all limbs at the coronet level and at the musculus pectoralis was measured by using thermographical methods. Blood samples of all participants were also taken for the analysis of Ginkgo biloba components on the same day. Clinical examinations were executed every week. At the beginning and the end of the examination phase blood samples were taken to check the medical conditions of the horses. Neither the full blood count nor the weekly clinical examinations showed an indication of a negative influence on the health of the horses when feeding Ginkgo biloba extract. The analysis of plasma levels of some components of the Ginkgo biloba extract was made by using a GC-MS/MS method at the company Dr. Wilmar Schwabe at Karlsruhe. The differentiation of the two groups (Ginkgo, Placebo) was possible only by analysing Bilobalid, which is measurable down to 0,1 ng/ml. The thermographical study showed the typical temperature fluctuations throughout all phases of the examination period. Nevertheless, significantly higher fluctuations of the Verum Group were measured during the feeding phase.
