The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the current state of knowledge about the amino acid requirements of cats to explain and identify any existing gaps in information. The literature was found by means of various searching machines and primarily only those studies flow in onto the evaluation which were really carried out to cats. In addition the results of feeding trials with cats were considered as well as the recommendations of the NRC (2006) and the AAFCO. The results of these studies are described and are available also in tabular form.
Enough information is given for the amino acid requirement of kittens. There exist for the essential amino acids in each case at least two studies which argue exclusively with the requirement for growth. With some amino acids, as for example methionine, more studies were found which deliver hints to the requirement. However, about the amino acid requirement of adult cats is known only very little. Only one single study (BURGER a. SMITH, 1987) deals with the lysine and methionine requirement for maintenance. For histidine, phenylalanine and tyrosine exist studies, in which the cats had already grown up on account of the long study duration and though they deliver at least hints to the requirement for maintenance. Investigations which deal with the amino acid requirement of older cats (> 7 years) were not found. Also for gestation and lactation there are no studies which deal with the amino acid requirement. Up to a report on the effects of a phenylalanine and tyrosine deficiency in pregnant and newborn cats no other hints for the requirement in this life phase exist. Besides, it seems that the recommendations of the NRC (2006) for reproduction, at least for the peak lactation, could be too low.
Substantial need for research exists therefore for the amino acid requirement of adult cats for maintenance, gestation and lactation. For the growth exist throughout enough works even if they are often older studies. In most cases the requirement recommendations are based on growth and nitrogen balance, however, in many cases a consideration of other parameters would be just desirable as a longer duration of trials (> 14 days) and should be considered in future studies.
