In the course of this diploma thesis and in the context of the literature study it was
found that a large number of essential oils have a variety of effects on small animals.
Specifically effects were noted in the areas of gastrointestinal diseases, respiratory
diseases, musculoskeletal disorders, halitosis and also anxiety and restlessness in
dogs and cats.
In an extensive literature research no studies about these effects in small animals
(especially dogs and cats) have been found. Several studies on guinea pigs have
In the subsequent field study on the market, only few products with essential oils as
ingredients have been found.
As part of the feed acceptance testing in ten subjects (dogs) it was confirmed that the
essential oils of dried anise fruits, bitter fennel fruits and thyme leaves, packed into a
smoothie, have been accepted by 100%.
