The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of DAOVET® on dogs. For this 10 healthy dogs from the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna were randomly divided in a crossover design into 2 groups with 5 dogs in each group. This study was divided into 2 experiments, whereas each experiment was divided into 2 rounds with a duration of each for 6 days. After every round there was a break of 2 weeks. During the 1st experiment DAOVET® (1 capsule/ dog/ day, p.o.) has been given, but there was no histamine provocation and during the 2nd experiment there was an application of DAOVET® and of histamine (1 mg/kg BW as a solution in water, p.o.). DAOVET® is a dietary supplement with diamine oxidase as an active agent. There was measured the histamine content in the daily feaces samples of each dog and in the serum at the end of each round. Furthermore the macroscopic consistence of the faeces was analysed by the WALTHAM®-faeces scoring scale (MOXHAM, 2001) and the dry substance and raw protein of the faeces were measured with Weender analysis to evaluate, whether the digestibility of the food was changing during the experiments. Finally we took blood samples to check if the dogs show symptoms of an infection, allergy or pseudallergic reactions. The results of the blood samples showed that all dogs were clinically healthy. In both experiments, there was neither a significant effect of DAOVET® on the histamine content in the faeces nor in the serum provable. Moreover there was no significant change in the dry substance and raw protein of the faeces noticeable under the treatment with DAOVET®. The macroscopic consistence of the faeces was softer with histamine provocation and with DAOVET® supplementation than in the control group (without DAOVET®). One dog of the control group developed pruritus, another dog of this group vomited two times during histamine provocation but without DAOVET® treatment. The other dogs of this group showed normal behavior.
