Abstract:
The aim of the present thesis was to assess the quality of hay from Vorarlberg produced for horses (first cut 2013). Therefore hay for horses was compared to hay produced for cows and to hay of farms keeping horses and cows. In March 2014, 28 hay samples were collected and sensorially evaluated. The botanical composition, the proportion of stems and leaves, the crude nutrient composition (crude fiber, - protein, -ash, and ether extract), the digestibility and the energy content were estimated and the feed quality (aroma, color, texture and contamination) were determined. The estimation of the energy content and the sensorial determination of the feed quality were used to calculate a “feed value number” (Futterwertzahl, FWZ), giving a rough estimate of the overall quality of the sample. A questionnaire regarding the farmers´ opinion on his hay production quality and –management was completed for each farm sampled. Comparative statistics were performed using the software SPSS.
