The aim of this work was to investigate the relation between feed sorting and the ruminal pH of dairy cows. The study was based on a feeding trial, using a ration with 50 % of concentrate, containing (DM basis) 38,5% of differently treated barley. The experiment started at day 21 p.p. and lasted until day 120 p.p. 30 cows were assigned to 3 feeding groups, one was the control group fed untreated barley. The other groups received barley that was treated with 1 % latic acid (LR) or with 1 % lactic acid at 55°C (L55). Leftovers of each cow were collected at three time points of the trial and chemically analysed by Weende analysis to examine the sorting behaviour of the cows. Ruminal pH was measured continuously using indwelling rumen sensors which measured the pH every ten minutes during the whole period of the experiment. The results did not show an different selection patterns nor acorrelation between ruminal pH values and the barley treatment. Therefore the results were analysed regarding the cows’ parity. Primiparous cows ate significantly less NDF than multiparous cows (p = 0,048). To get a better impression of the selection pattern a sorting index by Leonardi et Armentano (2003) which they used for results of the penn state particle seperator was adapted for NDF. With this sorting index it could be proven that primiparous dairy cows selected against NDF (p = 0,028).
