In this diploma thesis, a survey on the frequency of occurrence of ear tip, ear edge- and flanknecrosis,
clinical symptoms, severity, course, vaccination status, feeding, housing and
genetics of affected pigs was carried out. Futhermore, already present results are used to
clarify the etiology better.
In addition to various parasitic (Sarcoptes scabei var suis), viral (PRRSV, PCV-2) and
bacterial (Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp. Spirochetes, Mycoplasma suis) agents,
there are also alimentary causes (Zinc and biotin deficiency) and endotoxins discussed as a
trigger for the occurrence of ear tip, ear edge and flank-necrosis. Fungal toxins (mycotoxins,
DON, ZON, T2 toxin, HT2 toxin) and mistakes in housing systems (overcrowding, poor
ventilation and food quality) are mentioned as another possible causative factor.
