In most European countries it is common practise to surgically castrate male piglets in order to avoid pork with boar taint. This painful procedure is discussed in many ways, because the Austrian and European law allows a castration without anaesthesia I analgesia till the age of seven days. Many studies are searching for a satisfactory alternative solution to the castration without pain management. One possibility is the pre-emptive use of analgesics for the reduction of pain induced by castration. In this investigation the influence of pre-emptive analgesia by administering meloxicam on postoperative behaviour should be considered.
