Abstract:
Introduction Primary epilepsy in boxer is reported in the literature. It was remarkable that over the last 6 years, boxers presented with fits at the VUW, were rarely diagnosed as primary epilepsy. Aim of this study was to evaluate the aetiology of seizures in boxers of our patient-index and to compare it with literature data. Material and methods All boxers with seizures within the last 7 years were included in this study retrospectively. The diagnosis was obtained by physical-neurologic examination, biochemical profile, hematology, cerebrospinal fluid analysis, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) and/or histopathological examination. Results During the observation period 1999-2005, 13 boxers with seizures were presented, in 11 patients symptomatic epilepsy was diagnosed. In 10 patients intracranial diseases and in one a systemic disease (chronic renal insufficiency) were determined as aetiology. In 6 boxers brain neoplasias were diagnosed by histology, in the next 3 patients a focal lesion was detected by MRI. Another 1 dog showed a pleocytosis in cerebrospinal fluid. In 2 boxers seizures were classified as primary (idiopathic) epilepsy. Conclusion In boxers the presumed diagnosis primary epilepsy should be made only after excluding symptomatic epilepsy. The use of liquor analysis and MRI is recommended, independently of age, history and physical-neurologic examination indicating primary epilepsy.
