The effect of lactating cows persistently infected with BVDV on the result of a BVD antibody ELISA in bulk milk of two dairy herds is described. The level of antibodies to BVDV, measured by an indirect ELISA-method in bulk milk may produce erroneous low-level-results, if milk of persistently infected cows is added, probably by the formation of BVDV-antigen-antibody-complexes which cannot be detected by the ELISA in bulk milk samples. This effect could also be shown in vitro in experimentally produced bulk milk. Therefore, especially at the beginning of a BVDV control programme, precautionary measures concerning cattle trade and transport must be taken irrespective of the level of antibodies to BVDV in bulk milk.
