Invasive and non-invasive methods to access pulmonary function are reviewed. The gold standard is still the iso-volumetric method. New non-invasive techniques such as forced oscillometry, respiratory inductive plethysmography and flowmetric analysis have increased the knowledge of lung function and its daily variability. Special software is necessary for analysis of data. The new systems still are deficient in early detection of RAO and exact differentiation with IAD. Broncho-provocation test are likely to contribute to the diagnostic sensitivity. The systems in total are labour-intensive and not robust enough for easy use in daily practice.
